So, a thread I saw yesterday (or maybe the day before) had a post mentioning playing an immortal skeleton astronaut whose body was used as a trigger for traps, or a human shield, or even as a stoppage to a BBEG's war machine system.

My DM agreed to allow me to play this character in an upcoming one-shot, with the stipulation that he be completely out of his fucking mind. Able to function just enough to occasionally focus on a short term goal. What I'd like help with is fleshing out some details about such a character.

As it stands, we've decided that no matter what, he is absolutely, 100% immortal. If his body gets shattered and separated, there is an innate magnetic attraction that rebuilds his body, with the pull getting proportionately stronger the further the pieces are from each other.

We have also decided that Pandora radio is playing in his head nonstop due to his fried radio receiver being fused to his skull.

Anything else I should consider/add? What are some ways I could absolutely wreck a game with such a character?

Question to all:

Should I have him completely freak the fuck out when he sees a new monster type? He was an astronaut in the 2010s, drifted for 322 years, and is now in the Middle Ages.

Would he be so fried it wouldn't faze him, or should his modern mentality still take hold at these crucial moments?
>>
Maybe have him still think he's in his own time and just find a way for him to explain away anything to the contrary? Or maybe he believes instead that he's arrived to the future of Earth and he's been "planet of the aped" and magic is just extremely high tech science?
Is there magic in the setting?

I really like the idea of him constantly referencing stuff from the 20th century. Especially when it would make no sense to people.

If he's immortal, surely he should just be trying to kill himself as much as possible as well?
>>
Arm him with the Wrench he was using to repair a solar panel before he was knocked off, maybe use the solar panel as a shield.

Also, is his suit unbreakable? if he gets blown up would he come back as JUST a skeleton or would his suit also reform?

So, did he go through the wormhole with or without his space shuttle, because if he went through with it, that might be his motivation, finding his space shuttle or it's various pieces to get back from where he came. Even though it wouldn't be able to fire off again in the first place.
>>
>>31236953
So maybe when he was tossed through the black hole he became a universal constant (or something), gives him a reason to be immortal.
>>
>>31236970
Without. He was cooked by radiation while drifting, and for some reason not killed outright. His flesh melted off, but the bones remained.

>>31236971
Might explain why he reforms all the time, but he was an immortal skeleton prior to the black hole.
>>
Backstory :

He was a Russian cosmonaut that crashed onto an unknown planet and was bombarded with cosmic radiation.

Without a space ship, he was forced to build a manual super-structure that pierced the atmosphere. Basically scooping all of the resources off one side of the planet and piling them up on the other until it was tall enough that he could escape the gravity of the planet.

This obviously drove him crazy.

He switches from a handful of personalities :

1) Actual personality. Depressed Soviet cosmonaut that wants to drink vodka but can no longer do so as he lacks the throat and organs required. Misses home cooking. Wants to know who won the war. No one knows what he's talking about.

2) American Radio Personality. Listening to years of talk radio and late night hosts have lead him to believe that he is also these people and switches between them at will. Everything is pretty much wildly inaccurate and on par with propaganda about America.

3) Wrestling announcer, because it's funny. BAH GAWD

4) Skeleton personality. All he does is scream and want to free other skeletons from their horrible flesh and muscle trappings. Remember, inside every person is a happy skeleton just dying to get out.

5) Smug British dandy. He encountered an SAS spy or something back in the day. It doesn't matter. It's an excuse to use a new funny voice and have stock actions that are easily recognizable.

That should be enough to cycle between.
>>
>>31237004
I also like the idea of multiple personality disorder.
>>
To keep him within the "utterly insane" requirement maybe roll a dice whenever you get a new objective, have 1 and 20 as full control/lucid, 2-4 and 17-19 as minor control, will aim for the goal but easily distracted, 5-9 and 11-16 would probably be barely usefull, maybe just keep walking or collapse and listen to the best of the 80's 90's and 00's.

10 would be actively work against the goal (poorly), run screaming through the entire BBEG's traps, punch the barbarian in the nipple, throw the clerics staff into a bush, throw pebbles at the halfling.
>>
>>31237081
Funny you should say that, the party's barbarian triggers his Rage Mode by tweaking his nips.

>>
>>31237004

All of this + he can see the ghosts/spirits of dead animals that we launched into space first to test the safety for humans.

He has spirit guides that speak to him in Russian and warn him about the future. If your DM is game, actual shamans/spirit-attuned people in the game's setting can *also* see them, which is horrifying for everyone involved. Non-spirit attuned people think everyone is bugfucking nuts.

>>
>>31237115

For a skeleton with zero well being for his survival, there's a few fun ways to make a rocket pack.

1) Lash together several wands of Telekinesis, pointed at the ground.
2) Enlist the help of alchemists to make an incredibly volatile compound. Enlist the help of dwarves to make an indestructible tube.
3) Ask the DM if one of your cosmic powers can be manifesting an astral jetpack that releases the screams of anyone who has ever perished in the cold blackness of space whenever it launches. Every time you use the rocket pack, the people around you have to make a fort save (an easy one, just so botches are funnier) to avoid radiation. Also any time it is used, an elderly person or a child somewhere on the plane dies.

>>
>>31237215

Children and the elderly are unfit to pass the health requirements for astronauts. Naturally, any time he is manifesting an astral jetpack on this current plane, it causes a child or an elderly person to die. Astral projections are just shadows. A 4th dimensional being casts 3-dimensional shadows; that's what astral projections are. He is attuned to the primary existence of "jetpack", which dwells beyond mortal ken.

It's not that hard to understand. The jetpacks he is creating are just shades of the original concept of what a jetpack is.

You could actually really sucker your DM and players with this.

Just be bugfucking nuts the entire game, but at the end, if you get your hands on the Artifact of Power (tm) or whatever Magical Macguffin that the BBEG was going to use to do something evil, the skeleton astronaut stops being completely crazy, and just becomes really lucid and kind of sad.

He thanks all of his party for keeping him company, since he was alone for such a long time, but he's finally found the way back home and that it's okay now.

Then starts floating in a most peculiar way, cue Bowie's Space Oddity, and he tells his party to tell his wife he loves her very much (even though they have no idea what he's talking about), and he starts "radioing" Major Tom, and he uses his rocket-pack of screams to fly off into space with the evil artifact.

Everyone is neglecting one of the most important parts of this. How the skeleton will enter the campaign.

Just popping in from a wormhole or black hole is not traumatizing enough for the other players, and they could easily (in-character) rationalize it away as a wizard's teleport or necromancy.

No, that won't do at all.

I posit that the wormhole tossed him out at this planet, but not *on it*. He was ejected into the space JUUUUST above the planet. Naturally, he floated there for maybe a year or two until a meteorite shower was about to strike the planet, at which point he grabbed onto one.

The skeleton astronaut needs to be on fire, screaming, riding a meteor right down beside the party, while Ride the Lightning by Metallica blares out from his transmitter, possibly amplified by any wizard staff or tower in the area.

Bonus points if he crashes into an orphanage, sickly villager, or the party itself.

(Also it sounds like he's laughing, screaming and crying, simultaneously)
>>
>>31237421

He should periodically check in with Ground Control for instructions too.

I'm thinking that as a space repairman, that he might have a number of shiny chrome, battery powered zero-g tools clipped to a to harness, protein (as well as other) pills, micrometeorites, space dust, a postcard from the Grand Canyon or some other very "Earthy" location, and if we wanted to give him a little magic or an ace in the hole, a "real" falling star to wish on that he caught and stored away for a rainy day.
>>
>>31237778
Wait.

Have it hurt.

Have him be screaming the entire time he pulls back together.

Have him be totally aware no matter how scattered his bones are.

Don't any metals exposed to the vacuum of space auto weld together if they contact each other? Maybe in his drift time, he took all of his metal pieces and let them contact fuse into a huge fuck off Melee weapon. He used it to push debris away from him that got too close, and now it serves as his faithful companion.

The cosmic irradiated rock killed him in the vast lostness of spaaaace and brought his drifting body back to life. The shock of the impact caused him to have no memory of being killed and he continued on living...with a little buddy in his head that has absorbed all kinds of radio signals and is retransmitting them at random into the space man's receiver.

>tfw I was awake last night thinking of this EXACT character

this is weird
>>
At night instead of sleeping he just stands in the middle of camp looking up at the stars. Sometimes hums, sometimes cries, sometimes mumbles "status reports".

He can speak russian and the people around him dont know wtf tongue it is and assume its demonic.

He is very good at math but uses the metric system. No one knows wtf a "click" is.

He expresses time in military time and has a magic watch that shows the relative time back home. His watch beeps every month at the same time and this launches into an insane tirade.

He doesnt fight well but has a small cosmonaut survivor rifle (look up astronaut guns on wikipedia they are neat) that is a "special attack"

I really like that this character can be played in different ways in the same campaign: jocular radio-announcer, captain with bravado at full-tilt, gleeful fish out of water, ranting and raving SPACE fanatic, and even tragic hero with pathos out the wazoo.
>>
If your DM green lights even half of this stuff, I'm having a hard time imagining him not outshining the rest of the party.
>>
All the main points so far:

Skeleton astronaut.
Cannot be destroyed, will reform with all items considered to be "his".
constantly has a pandora playlist playing through coms system (best of 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's most likely).
Bat shit insane
Came through a black hole
Random cosmic powers (At DM's leisure)
Will run directly into traps and problems
Constantly reporting back to "Ground control"
Probably has multiple personality disorder
Can range from Super helpful to tweaking the barbarians nipples in seconds
Jetpack made from space screams, powered by space screams and regrets
Companions are dead astronauts and animals sent to space
will occasionally sing "Rocket-man", "Don't stop me now", "Space oddity" and other such songs
"STARS. SO MANY FUCKING STARS. TOO MANY STARS. ALL I CAN SEE ARE FUCKING STARS. FUCK."
arrived on the planet by hitching a ride on a meteorite
Refers to himself as Major Tom when reporting to "Ground control"
Will only answer to the name Roskosmos (the name on his suit)
Still adapting to being effected by gravity
Pockets contain wrenches, postcards, Protein pills, The last tear he ever shed, preserved by the coldness of space and unending radiation and space bits
Has a wishing star trapped in his skull, no-one knows about it
wields a [Non-Descript-Weapon] made from cold welded space debris and a cosmonauts survivor rifle
Speaks russian (no-one understands russian)
Good at maths, measures in metric
wrist watch keeping earth time
>>
Thought: a GREAT cosmic power would be the ability to negate gravity for himself and potentially others. While his movements may be slow and awkward and goody on the ground, once this power kicks in and allows him to use his astronaut/cosmonaut training, the zero-g maneuvers he can pull off are fast, precise and powerful.
>>
>>31238380

Maybe in terms of character, fluff, and the spotlight but I haven't seen any real combat advantages. Especially when taking into account his many flaws that would carry over into combat.
>>
>>31238432
Turning of gravity, causing the environment to be one only he has experience in, would be pretty rad.
>>
Cosmic power idea: Radiation funneling, he opens part of his suit and unleashes so much gamma radiation that for eons people think that it was the sight of a duel between gods.

When he's finished with melting people he reabsorbs the radiation so it wont hurt his new Comrades.
>>
>>31238468
That's a little silly
>>
>>31238517
all them rads have to go somewhere
>>
>>31238530
Well, the ability to release gamma radiation en massse itself isn't a bad idea, just the way he explained it made it seem silly.
>>
>>31238423
Constantly and unconsciously sets up skeleton/bone/space jokes and puns. Never actually or purposefully says the punchline.

Consistently "brave," "dashing" and "courageous," in the face of terrible odds while reserving FULL ALERT mode for silly or inconsequential issues.
>>
"SPAAAAACE!!!!!!"

and then he opens up the front of his suit like a Flasher. A blinding light and powerful suction through a portal to the hard vacuum of deep space.

he is truly one with the cosmos.
Watch your ass around space skeletons.

>When experiments testing the viability of tapping into the quantum vacuum for energy were performed on the Apollo 21 Lab Station, reports devolved into strange ramblings about how their conclusions were inconceivable to human minds. Before all communication ceased, garbled messages were sent to earth from the astronauts about their experiments revealing to them the "howling face of the sun." A rescue crew was violently repulsed from the station by corpses in the astronaut's space suits. Footage of the incident show ghostly images of tormented figures hanging just behind these corpses, struggling, but seemingly unable to pull themselves apart from their decaying bodies.
Delicious Kieth Thompson weirdness
>>
>>31238658
Further idea: doing so doesn't just open a portal to vacuum, but recreates the conditions of his death; everything in the room becomes weightless, the room itself might start tumbling, giant gashes appear in the walls leading to space as debris punches through the outer hull, the air fills with the panicked commands of Mission Control, etc.
If they're outside, things get even weirder.

>>31238787
The accident on the Apollo 21 Lab Station couldn't be contained. Rescue missions sent to the station disaster hurriedly collected the lab's most recent studies of the sun's relations to a quantum vacuum. Unexpectedly the teams broke all protocol and transmitted this data openly and unencrypted. The data was a garbled mess of obscure information and bizarrely outdated language. What could be gleaned from it though were very clear specifications for angles and spectral configurations for viewing specific parts of the sun. Attempts of following these directions using remote viewing from earth through space telescopes ruined the orbital equipment. All other manned orbital stations that attempted it immediately cut off their contact with the earth.

After a prolonged silence the medley of military presences in orbit unleashed themselves unilaterally unto the earth. Orbital kinetic bombardment weapons carved strange symbols across the earth's surface. The attacks on heavily populated areas however were primarily carried out by manned reentry drop-frames: armed suits intended for quick reaction force insertion. Millions of these orbital drop frames blazed through the atmosphere, unfurling into their squat insectoid shapes upon landing. The were covered in hastily painted glyphs. Downed drop frames always proved to have dead pilots hanging limply within.

Their only communications were being piped back and forth between the millions of drop frames: an endless loop of a synthesized voice saying

"Burn a path to earth. Prepare them for the Sun's arrival."

Guys. I know we've had fun here, but

Skellonaut can't stay in a DnD setting forever

Underneath his nonsense exterior, we know he only wishes for death

Players won't question why he tries to learn Necromancy. He's a skeleton, and also insane

Once he has enough mastery over it, he can use it to finally put his own bones to rest

On his tombstone, the party writes his catchphrase

The Ride Never Ends

Humans do have bacteria in their bodies, and if they died in a suit, as many pictures are shown here. The bacteria would survive, being able to break down the flesh, this would use up oxygen pretty fast, however, and begin to ferment.

So this actually sounds like the skeleton has minor schizophrenia.

I posit he has a permanent True Seeing effect and is scrying every plane at the same time. Seeing into space has given him the chance to pierce the veil and he exists in a quantum state in all planes.

What this means for the party is that he will be wrestling/kickboxing with the air before letting out a scream and ROCKETING AWAY as he's 'thrown' by a beast in a plane different than the one they're currently on.
>>
>>31239562

Runa Dawnsmith remembered having grown up in the Holy Church of Vancia's Home for War Orphans alongside many other children whose parents had been claimed by the Confederacy of Necromancers, where a profound hatred for the undead and the black hearted villains who raised them had been instilled in her from a young age. She reminisced that it was that very same hatred that had guided her path to become a Paladin-Justicar of the Church. She recalled that this hatred that had allowed her to smite more abominations and their masters than she could count. She milled over the fact that this same hatred that would have urged her to strike down anyone blasphemous enough to suggest that she might one day willingly share company with the undead.

"Funny how things can change..."

Runa Dawnsmith mused aloud to no one in particular. Hefting the load of firewood in her arms, the Paladin-Justicar looked at her companion and hitched her head to the side, indicating it was time to return to camp. The skeleton in the bizarre cloth, glass and metal "armor" bobbed his head in understanding, light glinting off the smite-dent she had put in his helmet on the day they'd met. Bearing a load of wood in his own arms, Major Tom began shuffling backwards back the way they'd come, performed a dance move he had once referred to as the "Moon Walk" to whatever outlandish music he was currently listening to.

"Can you turn that up Tom? I think I recognize this one."

Runs Dawnsmith said, following the skeleton's lead.

Unlike that holy-than-thou Runa, the reason that Yohn's dislike of "Major Tom" wasn't based on religion, ideology, or creepiness. It wasn't even based on the fact that the few small nuts of silvery metal or hunks of rough, porous rock he'd managed to "liberate" from the pockets in the skeleton's armor turned out to be worthless when he'd brought them to his fence. No, Yohn's real objection to traveling with the white-clad undead was the fact that he was so damned unpredictable.

When your profession can be best described as "dick-ass thief " you have to be able to rely on your targets and allies acting predictably. You have to trust that your mark will be so caught up with their daily routine that they'll neither feel nor suspect you cutting their purse strings, and you have to trust that your compatriots will be NOT bring the attention of every Paladin in town down around your ears by bounding undisguised across the market place shouting at the top of the lungs he DOESNT have how glad he is to see people again after his long trip trough the cosmos!

"No, Major Tom's special kind of madness is most definitely cramping my game."

Yohn thought as he tried for the seventh time to disarm the wall trap currently impeding the group's progress. Wiping his brow, the man calmly stowed his tools before standing up and motioning for their skeletal comrade to join him by the trigger mechanism.

"At least he's good for something..."
Yohn thought.

dont want to spoil a good thing

also, just in case any body in the party tries, attempts to polymorph him melts his new polymorphed form into biological sludge which reforms back into the skeleton astronaut (he is of course screaming bloody murder while all of this is occurring)

If there was anything more profound than Runa's former hatred for their newest companion and more persistent than Yohn's annoyance with the Major, it was The sense of terror the undead starfarer instilled in Lisbet. Although the Holy Church of Vancia's doctrine held that the undead should not be pitied, and even though the adolescent priestess herself had conducted sermons on how one must always be brave in such trying times, discussing religious theory in the cathedral library or preaching in the park for extra credit at the seminary were VERY different than coming face to face with an actual abomination, in the flesh or lack thereof.

Even though the others in her little troupe had eventually come to be comfortable around Major Tom, Lisbet remained fearful and alert, neither able to look directly at the creature nor take her eyes off him lest he do something horrible. Of course, it didn't help how he always seemed to vanish around midnight, and how lately she'd caught the strangely armored skeleton sneaking closer to her, or reaching toward her as if to grab her! He'd even very nearly gotten Lisbet to break her symbol of the Holy Light with how tight she'd been gripping it!

This night especially, the young holywoman couldn't sleep for fear that the undead in the strange white shrouds would come to end her life, but found also that she could no longer continue living in such fear of their most unusual guest. Making the hardest decision if her life, Lisbet donned her vestments, still dusty from the day's travels, and grasped close her holy symbol and prayerbook, leaving her tent to confront her foe.

I would like this thread to now be about compiling a set playlist for Major Tom.

These are songs he has stored somehow on his suit's control panel and can play at will.

Smooth Criminal

Rocket Man

Ride the Lightning

Don't Stop Me Now

What else?

American pie, Major Tom's probably not too much of a fan of communists anymore.

Robot Rock by Daft Punk for when he's pissed off. It just sounds right for a rampaging astronaut skeleton.

I like the idea of him wanting to finally die and be at peace by gaining magic power through some kind of necrotic energy macguffin, etc. then he can be with his dead family and also his squad mates in whatever mission they perished in. (some earlier posts were discussing a similar idea)

It hadn't taken a lot of searching before Lisbet found the Major, being able to hear the strange, unholy music he played at all hours, and the young priestess was surprised and terrified at the thought that he would conduct his unholy and nefarious nightly ritual so close to the camp they all shared. Crouched low in the undergrowth in a rather unclerical act of subterfuge, she was hidden from view as the undead turned to face her direction, moon and stars reflected in the strange glass visor of his helmet, the cool light illuminating the white skull within. There was a squelch of static, and then quiet as the music ceased, a soft, empty, expectant noise issuing from inside the helmet before the skeleton began to speak in a tone of voice far wearier than Lisbet had heard him use before.

"This Major Tom to Ground Control... Or... Houston... Or Moscow... Or anyone receiving this broadcast, over."

The undead paused and looked up at the night sky, as if waiting for some sort of reply coming from that direction.

"What follows is the situation report for April the 3rd, Year 2642, Earth Reckoning. Or at least, it's April the 3rd,
Year 2642 by My Reckoning. HA HA HA!"

The skeleton's raucous laugh came so unexpectedly that Lisbet nearly shrieked and lept from her hiding spot, but Tom didn't seem to notice.
>>
>>31244269
"Weather conditions have been nominal, as I understand them, for this time of the year in this part of this particular planet. The road has been level and the ifher members if my exploratory team have been amiable and in good spirits. I met a raccoon while setting up camp this evening. Poked that raccoon for Science. Had to fight off that raccoon. You'll receive a full report once I return."

The undead once more grew silent, as if giving his unseen audience time to voice their approval oracle thereof to his methodology.

"Our team's chaplain doesn't seem to care for me. Shrinks away. Haven't the slightest notion why. She reminds me of... Well... Someone I'd much rather be talking to rift now than you, Ground Control, no offense!"

Again the strangely suited figure laughed, seeming to scan the sky from horizon to horizon as he gave "Ground Control" time to think of an adequate response.

"They're nearly the same height. Look pretty similar too, if you exchanged their hair colors. I tried to give the chaplain a horsey ride, but she clearly wasn't having with it. Anyway, not sure why you'd send along a kid on an exploratory mission like this, but she seems to know her stuff. I just know I wouldn't send my daughter out into deep space is all..."

By this time, Lisbet found herself feeling not just foolish for her earlier fear, but almost ashamed if her treatment of the thing, the man, when her companions had seen the truth much sooner. Moving as silently as she could, the young priestess left the space man to finish his report, feeling that the journey together might be much better come tomorrow. As she crept away through the underbrush, she heard the skeleton say,

"I guess that concludes my report. I might also note that the stars are particularly beautiful tonight, but FUCK the stars. Seriously. FUCK 'EM."

If the attraction between his bodyparts is magnetic, can his reformation be prevented with a sufficiently powerful magnet? Also, magnetic fields get weaker with distance. I think this also makes more sense for your skelly body the more you are smashed apart, the longer it takes to reform.
